Thornbury Gamma Knife Centre

Summit Asset Management Limited (“SAM”) in conjunction with its subsidiary Medial Equipment Solutions Limited (“MESL”) has recently completed a £2.4 million facility for the financing of a Gamma Knife at Thornbury Radio Surgery Centre (“TRC”). TRC is a new company 50% owned by BMI Healthcare, a UK health services provider with almost 60 hospitals offering national coverage, and complex surgery. The Gamma Knife is situated at the BMI hospital in Thornbury, Sheffield.
TRC, which treated its first patients in September 2008, is the first independent Gamma Knife facility outside of London and only the fourth Gamma Knife located within the UK. The centre uses the latest technology – the Leksell Perfexion Gamma Knife.
Gamma Knife surgery is a well-established method of treating selected areas of the brain. No incisions are made; instead very precisely focused beams of radiation are directed to the treatment area.
More than 50,000 patients are treated worldwide by Gamma Knife surgery each year. Gamma Knife surgery is a unique method that delivers extremely focused radiation beams to targets in the brain. The radiation source used is called cobalt. The shape and dose of the radiation is optimised to hit only the target, without damaging surrounding healthy tissue.
