Water to be Used to Power Windsor Castle
21/11/2011
South East Power Limited has begun the installation of two turbines, based upon 2000 year old technology, at Romney Weir near Windsor, Berkshire.
The turbines will be driven by screw-type blades, powered by the force of water rushing over a 2 metre high weir.
The turbines will produce on average 1.7 million kilowatt hours of electricity per annum, which is enough to power 400 homes - or one reaonable sized castle.
The design of the screws was originally pioneered by Greek mathematician Archimedes of Syracuse in Sicily where pumps using the Archimedes design were used to carry water from low lying areas to irrigate higher areas.
The project was proposed to the royal household in 2006, and was originally to have been implemented in conjunction with Eon.
Each of the two units weigh close to 40 tonnes, and together they will provide almost all of the current electricity needs of the royal estate.
